In fashion you never stop learning

In Fashion you never stop learning

When I speak about education and learning, I don’t take for granted that you’re very young, and still need to require basic skills in the given area. Quite on the contrary, actually, I assume that you’re a smart person, who, regardless of age and skill set, is eager to learn new things or keep yourself up-to-date. This is an all-together different type of person compared to a Freshman, because in fashion you never stop learning. Therefore learning and acquiring new knowledge and skills shouldn’t be considered some sort of lack in our professional preparation, but rather our fighter instinct and passion shining through, and driving us towards new goals. And, contrary to the idea that some day, you will ‘know the necessary stuff’, life is teaching us a lesson (in the true sense of the word), as different phases in our lives call for different abolities to handle them. While we’re still children, we forced to make some choices about what subjects to study at school. Later, this turns into an existentialistic choice about the …

Studying fashion design abroad - Nanjing Road Shanghai

Studying Fashion Design abroad

I’ve often been met with the question from future students in Fashion Design, of what was the best city for studying fashion design abroad. To this, there’s of course not one right answer. I can tell you about my own experience. When I was young, I chose to study in Milano. Being from Copenhagen (Denmark), to me Milano was everything, Copenhagen wasn’t; it was warm, glamourous, exuberant, elegant, and a freaking lot of fun. This, to me, when I was 19 years old, was very inspiring (and actually still is). Probably it was closer to my natural style and persona, and therefore I was vey attracted to it. For me, studying fashion design abroad in Milano was one of the best choices, I’ve made in my life. I just loved the place, and it was the beginning of a long and happy career in fashion. Therefore, based on my own experience, I would always advice people to study, where they feel inspired and can relate to the place, its people, and lifestyle. It has to …

how to get an internship or job in fashion

How to get an internship or job in fashion

It’s summer holiday – or with other words; time off from school or work. It’s also the time of the year, where students look for an internship, newly graduates for their first job or placement, or if you already work and just wish to change job, for the next opportunity. With more time than normally to think about your career and future in fashion, right now is a good time to make plans and consider your next step in how to get an internship or job in fashion. The other day I spoke to a young fashion designer from Israel, who recently moved to Switzerland, and she asked me how to get an internship or job in fashion. Normally this is something your previous school will help you with, if they have a Career Service department, but if you have moved to a different place, where your previous institution isn’t well-connected, you’re on your own. Other times, your university may not have luck in finding you a placement, or it doesn’t happen quickly enough for your …

Fashion designer Daria Stravinsky

Fashion designer Daria Stravinsky

During Monte Carlo Fashion Week ss16, I was lucky to run into one of Russia’s rising fashion talents; fashion designer Daria Stravinsky. She’s sweet, pretty, nice, hardworking, professional, inspiring, and pregnant – wauw! It’s hard to write about all her initiatives in little space, but to keep it short, she has her own fashion brand that takes its name after her: Dasha Stravinsky. As she describes below, one of her great passions is prints, which plays an important role in her collections, and they’re all made by Daria. Her profile caught the attention of Carlo Ramello, historical fur brand, and she became one of the young talents that he collaborates with. At the moment, she’s presenting her collection in his multi-brand boutique in Monte Carlo and San Remo. A part from having her own fashion brand, Daria is engaged in a lot of other exciting projects. Just have a read on the About page of her website, and you get an instant feel of the passion behind the work, and the curiosity to think and …

Monte Carlo fashion week

Monte Carlo Fashion Week ss16

From the 6-8th of July, Monte Carlo fashion week was held. I have previously written about the New Fashion Capitals (read more about that here), and I believe Monte Carlo is a very interesting place for people looking to set up a fashion brand, or simply show the collections. The thing with the established fashion capitals is that there are already so many great brands. Do you really feel that you have something to add to the Italian fashion scene? Well, at least, I don’t. On the other hand, though, I could see a lot of brands benefitting from showing during Monte Carlo Fashion Week, as well as the marketing opportunity of setting up the actual brand there. Because, no matter how you look at it, Monte Carlo has a fantastic brand value. The DNA is crystal clear, as it’s the epitome of French Rivera, glamour and The Good Life, and no matter how much people say they dislike Monaco, they’re still very curious about it. Therefore showcasing in Monte Carlo is a great way …

Fashion calendar - Ainur Turisbek

The Fashion Calendar

It seems like it’s always fashion week somewhere in the world. Menswear, womenswear, Haute Couture, Resort and Pre-Fall – London, Paris, Milan, New York, and Kiev. It can be hard to keep the overview, but luckily you can find a very comprehensive fashion calendar on-line. Two sites offer what, according to me, are the most useful weekly calendars: Fashion Week Online NowFashion The first one from Fashion Week Online can be synced with your Google calendar, if you have a Gmail account. Then you will really never miss any event. The second is just a clear overview, and I appreciate the calendar format. I like to see the photos from the shows on Style.com, which I have used for more than a decade. A lot of other sites offer the same possibility, such as Vogue.com, Elle.com, and Fashionnow.com, but I’m used to Style, and faithful to them. Human beings – we like our habits and stick to them. You can of course choose the one, you like the best, or switch between them. Another thing that’s …

how to prepare for a future in fashion

How to prepare for a future in fashion

The future has always been unknown, and considering how fast things happen today, it certainly still is. I have often been asked by young students on how to prepare for a future in fashion, if studying fashion was a good choice, and what city is the best for a fashion degree. Of course, I don’t hold the answer to any of these questions, but after 15 years in the industry, I start to have an idea about, what could potentially work. If studying Fashion is a strong choice? Well, I can only say that it may not be as good a guarantee as studying law, finance, IT or odontology, but I still believe that the strongest choice will always be studying, what you love. Always. If you do something, you don’t feel totally and utterly passionate about, you will always and only be mediocre at it – no matter how hard you work. And considering that you will perhaps have to do this for many, many years, doing something you love is a really good investment, …
