Becoming an accessory designer - Hongzhan He

Becoming an Accessory Designer

My name is Hongzhan, and I am 24 years old and from Hunan, China. I live and study Accessory Design in Milan, and before coming here, I already completed a bachelor degree in Beijing, majoring in English. After my BA degree, though, I realized that I have no interest in a safe and repetitive job like teaching or translating, and I decided to try something totally different. So far, and at the beginning of my 3rd year in Accessory Design, I am totally content and grateful for this decision of becoming an Accessory Designer. Sometimes I feel, I was destined to choose this career. I grew up in a small town located in central southern China, where people live in a traditional way and barely have any comprehension about fashion. My grandfather was one of the best shoemakers in town, and he educated my father and my uncle with his experience and skill. Unfortunately he passed away, before I was born, and I never had the chance to meet him. My dad, after failing with …

Fashion journalist in Paris - Anastasiya Mozgovaya

A Fashion Journalist in Paris

So, what happens to me next? In the previous post of mine, I told you about the “before” part of my life, but what about “now” being a fashion journalist in Paris? When you are in university, as I was until recently, all you dream about is graduation. Right after finishing, it feels like you will be able to do whatever you want (meaning working twice as much and sleeping just as little), but when you do graduate, the reality slaps you in the face. There are some people, who are not ready for it at all, so they start panicking, but there are others, who just do things, no matter what. To be perfectly honest, I am a crazy combo of both. The biggest issue for graduates is to find a job, so I keep on telling everyone not to worry and that there is a suitable place for everyone, whereas in my own head, I sometimes imagine ending up as the biggest looser of all. I literally spend my whole life panicking, but …

How to become a fashion journalist - Anastasiya Mozgovaya

How to become a fashion journalist

My name is Anastasiya Mozgovaya, and I am 21 years old. I was born and raised in Dnipropetrovsk, Eastern Ukraine, but moved to Kiev, the capital of Ukraine, after graduating from high school in order to study at university. I received my bachelor`s degree in “Editing and Publishing” in June 2015. At the moment, I am at the crossroad of many options of what to do next of how to become a fashion journalist. I have always been one of those kids, who wanted to choose their own outfits from a very young age, no matter what their parents thought or said. I had a very vivid idea of what I wanted to look like. In middle school, I took up drawing classes, where I had a chance to explore my first fashion magazine. I honestly do not remember which one it was, but I looked at every single page many-many times and felt a new kind of very strong excitement. That was the moment, when I realised I wanted to be in fashion. Back …

New fashion brand Haveney

Haveney; a new fashion brand

I have previously written about the new fashion brand Haveney, and the designer behind Laetitia Rossazza (read more about that here). Based in Marseille, and not one of the big fashion capitals, it’s interesting to experience a designer – perhaps not exactly growing up in the middle of lavender and big ships with cargo – but still in some way living a different experience with less Fondazione Prada and MMM. At least, I find it very interesting to see what designers growing up with different aspirations have to offer to the international fashion system. Since I saw her fashion show at MC Fashion Week, she has been busy with her future pop-up store, which will open in September in Marseille, in the biggest commercial centre in the region. The concept of the store is having different brands based on the theme of beauty. The entire collection will be for sale, and prior to this, there were lots of preparation, production, and PR. She also had to work on the ‘after show’ with publishing the best …

Fashion designer Daria Stravinsky

Fashion designer Daria Stravinsky

During Monte Carlo Fashion Week ss16, I was lucky to run into one of Russia’s rising fashion talents; fashion designer Daria Stravinsky. She’s sweet, pretty, nice, hardworking, professional, inspiring, and pregnant – wauw! It’s hard to write about all her initiatives in little space, but to keep it short, she has her own fashion brand that takes its name after her: Dasha Stravinsky. As she describes below, one of her great passions is prints, which plays an important role in her collections, and they’re all made by Daria. Her profile caught the attention of Carlo Ramello, historical fur brand, and she became one of the young talents that he collaborates with. At the moment, she’s presenting her collection in his multi-brand boutique in Monte Carlo and San Remo. A part from having her own fashion brand, Daria is engaged in a lot of other exciting projects. Just have a read on the About page of her website, and you get an instant feel of the passion behind the work, and the curiosity to think and …

sikh-chic with Jeetinder Sandhu

Sikh-chic with Jeetinder Sandhu

Interesting things often happen when you take two apparently contradicting things and, in equal parts, mix them together. This was also the case, when New Delhi met London, and out came sikh-chic with Jeetinder Sandhu. A lot of good things can be said about him. The first that comes to my mind, is that nobody in the whole world looks as good with Aviator sunglasses on as him. Have a look at his photo at the top – not hard to imagine, right? Then add a hand-carrier man bag with his super designs. Voilà. The second good thing is that he was the one, who, in persona, convinced me that men can look good in slim tracksuits made partly of chiffon (in black, of course). For someone with a European aesthetics (myself) that can feel rather… Well, intense. That was until I met Jee. Always challenge the rules – and your teacher. On a more serious notion, Jee was one of the participants in London Graduate Fashion Week 2013, who got most press because of …

New fashion designers from Georgia - Keti Chkhikvadze

New fashion designers from Georgia

Do you remember how important Japan was to fashion in the 1980s? Well, perhaps you don’t, as maybe you weren’t born yet, but then there’s a chance that you have read about when Miyake, Kenzo, Yamamoto and Kawakubo placed Tokyo on the fashion map and inspired everyone from NYC to Milano. Right now, there’s a new movement of new fashion designers from Georgia, who are really shaking up the fashion world with different and fresh ideas. Since the 80s, fashion has flirted and briefly extracted inspiration from almost every possible corner of the world, but such a strong and persisting influence hasn’t been seen since then. Today new, upcoming designers emerge from everywhere, and good schools in the big fashion capitals train a lot of new talent every single season presented in prestigious fashion shows. Tamuna Ingorokva Not all, and not a lot of new designers will still be around in 10 years, as it’s limited how many new designers the world actually need and can foster. So where will the new talents come from …

New designer Irina Krasilnikova

New designer Irina Krasilnikova

There’s a lot of cool work out there that’s hugely inspiring. New designers use their youth, ambition and talent to invent the fashion of tomorrow, and it feels wonderfully refreshing in a world with conglomerate fashion companies that are so powerful that it seems like there’s no place in the world without a Louis Vuitton store. Don’t get me wrong; I love the big brands – but I also love something more special and original. Wearing something interesting, and something not everyone has, makes you feel very special. Farfetch is an online fashion boutique with a nice variety of new fashion brands, and otherwise these new designers are mostly available in their own mono-brand store in their country of origin together with a few selected multi-brand stores. Therefore you need to be very well informed, when you visit a new place as a tourist, if you’re going to dig out any of the cool designers in some of the concept stores. I came across new designer Irina Krasilnikova during Kiev Fashion Days in Ukraine. There are …
